How to balance toppings better
Topping load is a structural decision, not a generosity decision. Past a certain weight per unit area, the base cannot cook and the flavours stop being distinguishable.
What you are aiming for
A pizza where every topping is tasteable individually, the base is fully cooked, and nothing slides off when a slice is lifted.
Why it happens
Toppings do three things at once: they add weight, they add water, and they insulate the base from top heat. All three scale with load. Beyond a certain point the base is simultaneously receiving more water and less heat, which is why an overloaded pizza is nearly always undercooked in the middle. Separately, flavours stop being individually perceptible once too many compete — a pizza with seven toppings usually tastes of the two strongest.

Levers are grouped by where in the process they sit, and within each group the strongest come first. Anything marked commonly overrated is advice you will see elsewhere that does less than it is credited with — and says why.

Why it is overstated: "Add more cheese so it holds together" treats a symptom of overloading by adding to the overload. It increases oiliness, slows the bake further, and makes the base wetter — the fix is fewer toppings, not more cheese over them.

Primary leverPerceptibility, not just cooking, is the constraint. Beyond three components the palate stops separating them and the pizza tastes generically 'loaded' rather than of anything.
Matching topping weight to base area and style
Primary leverA thin Neapolitan base carries far less than a Detroit pan. The same topping weight that is restrained on a pan pizza will drown a thin round.
Pre-cooking the wet and slow-cooking components

Layering deliberately, with construction order in mind

What it costs you
Restraint is genuinely less fun for some people, and a loaded pizza is a legitimate thing to want — several real styles, including many American regional ones, are built around generosity rather than restraint. The trade is real: choose a style with a base built to carry the load rather than restraining toppings on a base that cannot.
How far you can realistically get
There is a hard structural limit — a thin base under a heavy load will not cook through, no matter how hot the oven or how good the surface. Past that point the only options are fewer toppings, a thicker base, or a pan.
