Square pizza

A generic menu and marketing term for rectangular or square pan pizza that, on its own, does not distinguish between several genuinely different American traditions — including Detroit-style (thick, cheese-to-the-edge, docked steel pan), Sicilian-American (thick, focaccia-like, often double-proofed), and Grandma-style (thin, olive-oil-crisped, quickly made) — each with meaningfully different pans, hydration, proofing, and topping order.

Common misuse

Treating 'square pizza' as one style — Detroit, Sicilian-American, and Grandma pizza differ meaningfully in pan type, hydration, and technique, and flattening them into one label obscures genuine regional distinctions.
