Separately, deep-dish is sometimes dismissed outside Chicago — and by some purists — as more of a savoury pie or casserole than 'real' pizza, given its thick, layered, knife-and-fork construction; this catalogue preserves that debate rather than resolving it.

Deep-dish dominates Chicago's outside reputation and tourist-facing marketing, but tavern-style is reportedly the more commonly eaten style among Chicagoans themselves — a genuine gap between outside perception and local everyday practice.
