Tonda

Italian · pronounced TON-dah

A round, individually-sized pizza served whole to one diner, as opposed to a tray or slab pizza sold by weight or by the piece. In Rome 'pizza tonda' specifically means the thin, crisp, low-rim round baked to order in the evening, and is contrasted directly with pizza al taglio — the same pizzeria may not serve both.

Literal meaning

Round (feminine)

Region

Italy, especially Rome

Also known as

pizza tonda, round pizza

Common misuse

Treating 'tonda' as a synonym for Neapolitan. Roman tonda is deliberately thinner, crisper and lower-rimmed than Neapolitan, and the two are understood locally as different pizzas, not different words for one.
