The pizza box as a fixture of takeaway and delivery culture
The corrugated-cardboard pizza box — designed to stay rigid enough to carry a hot pizza flat, ventilated to reduce sogginess, and cheap to mass-produce and dispose of — became the default packaging for takeaway and delivered pizza through the 20th century (the first dedicated patent dates to 1963) and is now a recognisable cultural object in its own right, sometimes repurposed as a serving tray. Its grease and cheese contamination also makes it a recurring subject of household-recycling confusion, since many recycling facilities are reluctant to accept used pizza boxes.
